With the prevalence of drug and alcohol use, companies nowadays tend to rely heavily on drug and alcohol screening to help maintain the safety and productivity of their employees. Screening is also a form of risk management because of the effects one might experience when under the influence. Providing frequent and accurate tests help prevent workers from showing up with impairments coming from substance abuse. Substance abuse can impact an individual’s judgment, coordination, and motor function; which can easily affect one’s safety (could be more prone to accidents) and productivity in the workplace. During a urine drug screening on site, the employee would first be asked if they are taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, as some might provide a false negative result. They would then be instructed to wash up, urinate into the toilet, and collect the urine sample with a container. About one to two ounces of urine should be collected from the employee and is clearly marked on the container; the test sample should be handed to a certified lab technician or healthcare provider.
