Alcohol breath content analyzing devices, commonly known as Breathalyzers, is blood alcohol testing equipment requiring the individual undergoing the breath test to blow into it. This device will register the individual’s blood alcohol concentration level.
Breathalyzer Calibration
Each state has specific laws and standards for blood alcohol testing equipment or breathalyzer recalibrations, when, and how they must be calibrated.
Basic guidelines:
- The alcohol breath testing device must be on a list of cleared and calibrated devices.
- The alcohol breath testing device must be appropriately maintained and checked for accuracy regularly.
- The person conducting the breath test must be certified in the use of that alcohol breath testing device.
- They must do so following his training.
- The person conducting the breath test must ensure the individual undergoing the test does not eat or smoke prior to testing.
Routine Breathalyzer Maintenance
- The blood alcohol testing equipment should be calibrated when the results of an accuracy test differ from the expected result.
- The blood alcohol testing equipment should be taken out of service if the device repeatedly fails to maintain its calibration if after two consecutive attempts to calibrate the device and a failed accuracy check was obtained.
General Practice For Good Use
- It is required that each person being tested uses a new mouthpiece for each test
- It’s important to ensure no alcohol or disinfectants are in the ambient air when conducting the test.
- It is advisable that you do not let high alcohol concentration reach the breathalyzer sensor (do not use mouthwash that contains alcohol prior to testing).

- It is recommended that you wait at least 20 minutes after drinking before conducting a breath test. Not waiting this period may cause false readings and damage the device sensor.
- Do not blow smoke, food, or liquids into the BACtrack as this will damage the sensor.
- It is advisable that you do not conduct testing in places that have strong winds, smoke, areas with large amounts of alcohol being consumed.
- You should replace the device’s batteries when the indicator reaches one bar.
- You should send your breathalyzer in for periodic calibration service as advised.
- IMPORTANT: It is crucial that you do not drink and drive.
