1. Pre-Testing Hydration Requirements
Donors must maintain normal hydration but restrict water intake to a maximum of 500 mL in the hour before testing to prevent a diluted sample.
-
2. Collect the Sample
Have the donor provide a urine sample directly into the collection cup. Ensure the urine level is above the minimum volume line (typically around 30 mL) to guarantee there is a sufficient amount of specimen for both the initial testing and any potential laboratory confirmation if required.
-
3. Verify Sample Temperature
Immediately check the built-in temperature strip on the cup. To verify the sample has not been substituted or tampered with, the green indicator should show a temperature between 32°C and 38°C within 4 minutes of collection.
-
4. Secure the Lid
Firmly screw the lid onto the cup until it is fully sealed. Ensuring a tight, secure seal is critical for hygienic purposes.
-
5. Prepare for Activation
Place the sealed cup upright on a clean, flat, horizontal surface.
-
6. Activate the Test (Tilt the Cup)
Tilt the cup completely onto its side, resting it securely on its raised flat edge. This specific tilting action activates the test by allowing the collected specimen to flow out of the main chamber and directly into the channels containing the test strips.
-
7. Set the Timer
Immediately start a timer for 5 minutes after activation. Allow the cup to sit undisturbed on the flat surface while the results develop.
-
8. Read Adulteration Results (3–5 Minutes)
Using the integrated adulteration/validity test strips, read these results between 3 and 5 minutes after tilting. Compare the strip colors to the included color reference chart to verify the integrity and validity of the specimen.
-
9. Interpreting Negative Results
Look at the Control (C) and Test (T) regions for each drug strip. A Negative result is indicated when a colored line appears next to both the Control (C) and the Test (T) region.
-
10. Interpreting Preliminary Positive Results
A preliminary positive result is indicated when a colored line appears next to the Control (C) region, but no line appears next to the Test (T) region. This indicates the presumptive presence of the target drug or metabolite.
-
11. Identify Invalid Results & Observe Time Limits
An Invalid result occurs if no line appears next to the Control (C) region, regardless of whether a line shows up in the Test (T) region. If a strip is invalid, the test is void and you must repeat the entire procedure using a brand-new cup and a new sample.

Bulk purchasing drug and alcohol testing devices can provide significant cost savings and improve workplace testing efficiency. Businesses conducting regular employee screening often purchase larger quantities to maintain compliance programs and reduce per-test costs. Bulk ordering also ensures consistent stock availability and minimises downtime when testing is required. Breathalysers Australia offers bulk purchasing discounts, which are displayed near the top of each of our drug testing product pages.
Saliva and urine drug tests are both commonly used for workplace drug screening. However, they detect drug use differently. Saliva testing identifies recent drug use and is more effective for determining impairment at the time of testing, making it ideal for workplace and roadside applications. Urine testing detects drug metabolites over a longer period, making it more suitable for identifying historical or dependent drug use in the workplace. Saliva testing is less invasive, easier to supervise, and provides faster onsite results, while urine testing generally has a longer detection window.
Please review our Workplace Drug Testing Compliance Guide, available here: Workplace Drug Test Compliance Guide
Any organisation that aims to achieve optimal performance from its employees and manage the risks linked to drug and alcohol use must establish clear policies. This is especially crucial in industries where safety is a priority. Employers are obligated to create a safe working environment and may introduce policies to uphold this duty. A well-defined policy aids in maintaining consistency throughout the organisation and mitigates potential legal ramifications.
