The ACT Drink Driving Laws

act-drink-driving-laws

With the widespread alcohol usage and consumption issues, places like the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and many others have implemented stricter and more modern drink diving policies. One of the main ACT drink driving laws is the alcohol drink driving limit; which requires drivers to have a BAC of under 0.05% before driving. It is considerably lower in Australia when compared to other countries like the USA; which has a 0.08% drink driving limit. A decrease in the BAC limit is an advantage rather than a hindrance to most; this is primarily because of how safer the roads could be. The lower alcohol limit policy also decreases the likelihood of alcohol-induced accidents by a considerable margin. The higher a driver’s BAC, the more likely they are to experience alcohol-induced impairments towards coordination, awareness, and judgment; which can all significantly affect an individual’s driving capabilities.

To strictly enforce the ACT drink driving laws and provide awareness to the public on the seriousness of DUI charges, city and government officials have now made DUI penalties more severe. Nowadays, even first-time low-range offenders can be given hefty fines and confiscate their licenses for up to three months. Repeat low-range offenders may now also be given ignition interlocks and have double the penalties and confiscation period. To avoid these penalties, people now rely on personal breathalyzers to help them know whether they can legally drive or not yet. Luckily enough, like BACtrack breathalyzers, personal devices are now being made with the same technology used in a police officer’s device. It allows for more accurate professional-grade BAC readings to be provided frequently by personal breathalyzers.

ACT Drink Driving Laws for Special Drivers

Other than the drink driving limit of 0.05%, “special drivers” by the ACT drink driving laws have an even lower BAC reading. Learner, probationary one, and probationary two drivers must have a BAC of 0.00%. Furthermore, truck, taxi, and bus drivers must maintain a BAC of less than 0.02% to be deemed legally capable of driving their vehicle. BACtrack personal breathalyzers may also help these types of drivers maintain a low BAC reading before driving. Other than calculating one’s BAC, a BACtrack device can also calculate how long and when its user’s BAC would return to 0.00%; an option that would prove to be very handy for these “special drivers.”

With penalties getting more severe, one should note how effective starting investing in a personal breathalyzer may be. One way of easily complying with the ACT drink driving laws nowadays is by knowing your exact BAC reading; and making a decision based on it. Knowing one’s BAC reading before getting behind the wheel, you can avoid other penalties like impounded vehicles and ignition interlocks.
